Advice for pregnant women: how best to get through the first three months

Living with a pregnancy is something that nobody is really prepared for until the actual moment arrives. Totally unknown sensations, impossible to imagine before they actually happen, both in the positive sense and the negative, that from one moment to the next form part of a pregnant women’s day to day. For this reason and from the trauma this experience can quite often mean, hearing or receiving bits of advice is really useful, especially during the first three months, which is quite often the most complicated period in the majority of cases.

Although each person lives their pregnancy in different ways, among which we find those who suffer some negative consequences it is true to say that the first 12 to 14 weeks are the critical period: nauseas, vomiting, overall discomfort…. A wide range of symptoms which we commonly hear of – between 50 to 80% of women suffer nauseas during the pregnancy- which complicates this first period of pregnancy a great deal.

Health begins in the shopping list

Our diet plays a leading role in our health, mood and performance. Naturally, during the pregnancy this is extremely important. Aside from merely finding out what’s good or not so good and leaving to one side those foods which we can’t consume, it’s useful to follow the healthiest possible diet: pulse, vegetables, fruit, unprocessed foods, dried fruits….A shopping list thought up for the benefit of our overall wellbeing, essential to minimize the possibility of a problem. Something as simple as having smaller meals more frequently can help us greatly.

Set out your pregnancy schedule

A pregnancy represents a special and unusual chapter in our lives. Those good habits which we adopt from the very first moment will stay with us during the complete term and make life easier even if complications arise. Or in the last stage, during which tiredness is practically ever present. Remember that doing moderate exercise means having a healthy life.

The doctor, our best friend

Going to the doctor shouldn’t be seen as something we do when we’re already sick or in pain but a sensible preventative measure to problems which may appear in the future. This key principle, which we can apply during all the stages of our life, should be at the forefront of our minds during a pregnancy. Keeping a watchful and knowledgeable eye on the foetus and its progress, is vital to keeping us not only healthy but also emotionally stable. So that everything is exactly as it should be.

Maintaining those good habits

A pregnancy shouldn’t mean that we have to radically change our habits. Although naturally there is a need to adjust certain customs, it is also a good idea to maintain those that are healthy, for those people who already live a healthy lifestyle and for those who simply view this as a good idea to take up. Our social life, resting sufficient hours, work and even our sexual relationships are a good way of keeping everything in perspective: there is a before and after in pregnancy, yes, but it’s not a different life, but merely a chapter in our very own one.

Get ready!

The best piece of advice for pregnant women is as follows: learn, listen, speak and get ready. In a short time, this life which is growing inside you will become a new member of the family, and for this reason we cannot wait until the very last moment to get ready. The third term of pregnancy is that moment to begin. Clothes, the bedroom, a buggy, clever tricks, psychological advice… A whole host of factors to bear in mind which won’t wait for the delivery date to arrive. The pregnancy, ultimately, is this : a time of preparation.

Even though the list of tips for pregnant women could be practically endless, the most important thing could be summed up in a few lines: healthy lifestyle, emotional stability, continuous learning and good company. The first term could be a micro phase with more problems than normal, but even so we shouldn’t lose our focus: the pregnancy is to live through and enjoy. A totally unique experience.
