The Reproduction Unit of Vistahermosa researches methods that increase the success rate and avoid multiple pregnancies

The embryo selection by metabolic criteria supports the doctoral thesis presented by Maria Gomez last May 24th at the University of Alicante.
To increase the success rate and to avoid multiple pregnancies is a constant that focus the investigations of the experts of the Reproduction Unit of Clinica Vistahermosa, directed by the Gynaecologist Dr. José Jesús López Gálvez.
In order to select the best viable embryo, this Unit carries out a sophisticated research since 2005, led by its Biologist Juan Manuel Moreno, with which we want to know how may affect the metabolic criteria that occurs in the drop of culture media where the embryo is developing before it is transferred.
At the moment the embryo selection is performed, mainly, following morphological and genetic criteria. “With the process that we are currently investigating these selections would be complemented with metabolic criteria which are produced in the drop of the culture media where the embryo is developing, with the one we would get a non-invasive method easy to perform” explains Juan Manuel Moreno.
This investigation, initiated by The Reproduction Unit of Clinica Vistahermosa, has attracted the interest of Dra. Maria Gomez to perform her doctoral thesis presented last May 24th. The project, coordinated by the Institute of Electrochemistry of University of Alicante and led by Professors Vicente Montiel and Jesus Iniesta, “focuses on the use of several methodologies based on electrochemical and analytical techniques for the detection of the oxidative stress and the metabolite in biological complex media, in particular proteins and cell culture media used in assisted reproduction techniques that will allow to define new criteria to help the selection of viable embryos”, said Maria Gomez.
