Statement from UR Vistahermosa regarding recent coverage
about donor sperm from European Sperm Bank:
Quality, safety, and full traceability
At UR Vistahermosa, quality and safety are among our core values. That is why we operate our own egg and sperm bank, ensuring full oversight, clear traceability, and the highest quality standards throughout the entire donation process.
All egg and sperm donors are selected with great care and undergo comprehensive screening in strict accordance with the guidelines of the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF). This screening includes, among other things, blood group determination, comprehensive blood and coagulation tests, extensive viral screening for HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis, as well as chromosomal analysis (karyotype).
Extensive genetic screening
To ensure the highest possible level of safety, extensive genetic screening is also carried out:
- Female donors are screened for cystic fibrosis, alpha and beta thalassemia (inherited blood disorders), sickle cell disease, spinal muscular atrophy (SMN1), hereditary hearing loss (GJB2), and Fragile X syndrome.
- Male donors are screened for cystic fibrosis, alpha and beta thalassemia (inherited blood disorders), sickle cell disease, spinal muscular atrophy (SMN1), and hereditary hearing loss (GJB2).
In addition, each donor’s medical history and family history are thoroughly evaluated, confirming that no known hereditary diseases have occurred across up to three generations. All donors also undergo a psychological assessment to ensure their suitability and well-being throughout the donation process.
Transparency, responsibility, and ethical standards
We would also like to assure our patients that UR Vistahermosa has never used donors from European Sperm Bank.
In full compliance with Spanish law, each donor is permitted to contribute to a maximum of six children born using that individual’s donated material.
