The goal of genetic selection is to achieve the healthiest possible embryo resulting from an In Vitro Fertilization
One of the areas of knowledge that has evolved the most is Genetics applied to Reproductive Medicine. “In Vistahermosa Reproduction Unit we have diagnostic techniques for the genetic study of embryos (Preimplantational Genetic Screening- PGS) that are generated in the laboratory through the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) procedure, being able to select those free of chromosomal alterations, able to develop an ongoing pregnancy “, explains the director of the center, Dr. José López Gálvez.
According to the specialist, this method is used primarily to help patients with difficult reproductive prognosis, “as happens in cases of old age or implantation problems, increasing the chances of success and safety, while reducing the risk of miscarriage”.
As Dr. López Gálvez emphasizes, the goal is to achieve the healthiest possible embryo. This procedure is performed on the third and fifth day of life of the embryos, performing a biopsy on a small sample of genetic material for the study of the entire genome of the embryo, identifying the healthiest ones, free of genetic diseases, to be transferred to the mother’s uterus. “This technology makes us more effective, raising the chances of achieving the pregnancy in the patient and having a healthy baby at home.”
