The vasectomy, this surgical process consists in cutting and tying the vas deferens in men in order to ensure that the semen has no spermatozoids, this method has been seen as the male contraceptive by definition with no way to reverse the process. Although the process requires surgery and cancels out any possibilities of becoming a dad for those who undergo the intervention, it’s not necessarily irreversible. Reversing a vasectomy is not a simple process, but it’s possible.
In the same way as carrying out the process, reversing a vesectomy requires an intervention that can be carried out with total security using the current microsurgical techniques available and with a high success rate. The chances of actioning this recanalization successfully depend to a greater extent on the time that has elapsed since the vasectomy, the longer the time that has passed the lower the chances of success.
In essence, in order to undo a vasectomy it is necessary to intervene surgically to restore to the vas deferens their capability to transport spermatozoids, connecting them once again by means of microsurgery. This process called vasovasostomy, has practically a 100% success rate during the first three years and although its effectiveness lessens gradually, some 15 years after a vasectomy its effectivity can be in excess of 70%.
General Anaesthesia is needed to perform a vasovasosthomy, therefore a certain amount of preparation is required. The person who wants to undertake this process must first carry out certain simple and routine checks, which allow the evaluation of the patient by the the medical team and as such the guarantees available and whether or not surgery is the best option. In this evaluation certain factors play an important role such as possible illnesses or medication ,the time that has elapsed since the vasectomy, ones personal situation or the state of current health.
The vasectomy: a mature decision
Undertaking a vasectomy, even though this can be reversed in another intervention, should not be viewed as just a temporary contraceptive method. Before undoing the effects of a vasectomy it is necessary to carry them out, and before taking any decisions, first an internal reflection process should exist; it’s not a decision that one should take irresponsibly, lightly, with the idea that it can be turned around just like that. Rather than a contraceptive method, it should be considered as the beginning of a new life project.
Even so, it’s perfectly above board and possible that this project can be modified as and when, or in other words a decision which has been taken with due thought and consideration can be altered should this be called for, some time after. In these cases, reversing the effects of a vasectomy is a way of starting a new chapter in life which allows one to look for a pregnancy in a natural way, and as such, make that all important dream of starting a family happen.
