Causes of female infertility problems

Couples who want to have children and after a year do not achieve the pregnancy, must be professionally informed about the reasons that prevent this desired pregnancy

The director of Vistahermosa Reproduction Unit, José López Gálvez, maintains that “there are several reasons that can make pregnancy difficult and in them, both the father and the mother are involved”. Thus, among the most frequent causes we find:

  1. Age. Women are born with a certain number of ovules for life. The quantity and quality of the ovules decreases with age. For this reason, after the age of 35 there are women who have problems to conceive.
  2. Polycystic ovary syndrome. A condition that prevents the small follicles of the ovaries from developing to become large and mature, responsible for releasing ovules. This pathology causes hormonal imbalances.
  3. Endometriosis. Appearance and growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, especially in the pelvic cavity, ovaries, behind the uterus, in the uterine ligaments, in the urinary bladder or in the intestine.
  4. Hyperprolactinemia. Disorder that affects the abnormally high level of the prolactin hormone in the blood. In women it causes alterations in the menstrual cycle and in men erectile dysfunction.
  5. Stress and anxiety. High levels of cortisol (stress hormone) produce an alteration in menstrual cycles that negatively affect pregnancy.
  6. Weight. The woman who is below her ideal weight may suffer alterations of her menstrual cycle and, likewise, reduce her chances of conceiving. In overweight men, the quality of sperm can be affected.
  7. Consumption of alcohol. The abuse of alcoholic beverages is related to the decrease in fertility in both sexes, but in women the effect is more harmful because they have a faster gastrointestinal absorption and a slower metabolism.
  8. Smoke. Habit that can cause early menopause or irregular menstrual periods.
  9. Drugs. The consumption of hallucinogenic substances, either by men or women, can prevent pregnancy in their case.
  10. Unexplained infertility. This is the diagnosis that occurs when there is no explanation since all tests show normal results. This type of infertility is caused by very subtle differences in the way the reproductive system works.
